Wildcraft of the Month - Preparing for Winter Solstice
Preparing for Winter Solstice
The beginning of December it is a good time to begin preparing for Winter Solstice, which marks the turning point of the year.
Wild Greenery.
Begin to gather greenery to make a beautiful celebration of Winter Solstice. A jug of ivy, fir tree, yew, holly, mistletoe and some bare twigs makes a simple alternative to a tree. Remember to only gather enough that it is not missed by the plant or tree, and to offer a thank you in gratitude.
Yule Log.
It is a Nordic Tradition to decorate a log to burn at Winter Solstice to honour and give thanks for the returning of the Light. Ribbons and a few springs of greenery are perfect. Its nice to have this on display for a time beforehand to remind us of the miracle of Midwinter. If you are able to do so safely, then remove the last stub of the burning log and keep it to light the Solstice Fire the following year, continuing the cycle.
Make Fire Cider.
Fire Cider is a wonderful remedy for sore throats, and great for keeping colds at bay. Take one or two tablespoons at the first signs of a cold and repeat every 4 hours until symptoms abate. It can also be used as a constitutional, and makes a delicious salad dressing.
1 medium onion chopped
5 cloves garlic chopped
3 tablespoons of freshly grated horseradish root
3 tablespoons of freshly grated ginger
Raw apple cider vinegar
Honey
Cayenne
Combine the onion, garlic, ginger, horseradish and place in a large wide neck jar. Cover with cider vinegar and leave in a warm place for 3-4 weeks. Then strain and add honey and cayenne to taste.
